JLo_Green_Versus_Versace_Bodysuit

You may have seen celebs like JLo, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen sportin’ this trend. It’s basically all over Instagram, and no strange face. If you don’t own it already, it may as well be the next addition to your essentials collection. And if you have a date or girls’ night coming up in the books, there’s no better time than now to show off your silhouette with this fun and flirty piece. One of the items that’s yet to cease in exuding its charm? The bodysuit.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane to pay tribute to the genius behind this statement piece.

Jules_Leotard

We owe our thanks to Parisian icon, performer, and aerialist for mastering the art of trapeze, and for serendipitously coming up with this brilliant creation, Jules Leotard. In case you haven’t figured, the leotard — named after Jules, himself — was the starting point for what essentially conceptualized into the bodysuit that we all know and love.

What initially started as athletic wear’s for ballerinas and performers for the sole purpose of sports activity and movement has since transcended into a form-fitting piece that can be dressed up or down depending on the vibe you’re going for.

Since the introduction of the leotard, designers have been adopting this one-piece into their own personal styles. Let’s throw it back to the 1950’s when Claire McCardell, a fashion designer, introduced the bodysuit to be worn as a top or t-shirt. The trend officially made its mark that year when Bettie Page, an American model, stepped out with it on the scene.

Since then, the infamous bodysuit has made appearances in Playboy, Wonder Woman, designer fashion shows, photo shoots, music videos, and now — per your choice, on the beach or as casual streetwear.

Like any trend, the bodysuit experienced a lull, but thankfully, has since resurrected and made its comeback in 2010, and we’ve been maxing out on this trend ever since. You’ll now see the bodysuit worn as a two-in-one combination of a top and underwear, a blouse, or a bathing suit. No matter how you define your personal style, there’s one that’ll tickle your fancy. If you’re going for a more feminine look, opt for a lace bodysuit. If you’re looking for something more edgy, try a fishnet one.  Want more comfort?  Try a sporty athleisure-style bodysuit.

Bodysuits are flexible in their everyday wear. Pair ‘em with a long skirt, high-waisted jeans, or denim shorts. Better yet, pair ‘em with a ruffle skirt if you’re feeling extra flashy. Have your pick between long-sleeve bodysuits, bodysuit dresses, or lace bodysuits. Bottom line — its chameleon effect will have you going to the bodysuit as a first resort the next time around.
